Symptoms of an Eye Emergency

Eye emergencies result from all sorts of conditions and situations. Though this list is far from exhaustive, you should absolutely seek medical attention if you experience:

  • Sudden vision loss
  • Sudden change in vision
  • Sudden change in floaters
  • Flashes of light
  • Sudden eye pain
  • Itchiness, redness, or irritation
  • An object embedded in your eye
  • Chemical contact with your eye
  • Thick, sticky discharge
  • Swelling
  • Sudden sensitivity to light
  • Unusual glare or halos around lights

Chemical Contact with the Eyes Requires Immediate Flushing

Chemicals could cause serious damage to your delicate ocular tissues. It’s crucial that you flush your eyes with clean, cool water immediately after the chemical contact occurs. Your eyes may feel fine after a few minutes of flushing. Even so, you need to flush your eyes out for a full 20 minutes to ensure all of the chemicals have been removed from the eyes.

Once you’ve completed 20 minutes of flushing, seek medical help.
